451 Group – Nirvanix pushes NAS into the cloud, adds backup and archive partner

This Impact Report, written by Henry Baltazar of the 451 group in July 2008, discusses Nirvanix’s emerging position in the Cloud. Baltazar explains how Nirvanix’s latest product offerings and partnerships attest to their meaningful place within the Cloud Storage sector, and the already present and likely even more extensive impact they will have on traditional storage system market.

Abstract: “Nirvanix is a member of the new breed of cloud storage service providers looking to disrupt the traditional storage system market while also catering to the emerging Web 2.0 space. It has released beta software which it claims will allow NAS devices to seamlessly migrate data to its Storage Delivery Network (SDN) grid. It's billing the new CloudNAS offering as an unlimited storage option, with recently used data stored locally and older files pushed out to the cloud. The company is developing online archive and backup services that will store content onto SDN; it has plans of making this code available to resellers. Recently, the vendor has formed partnerships with backup and archive specialists Asigra and Atempo whereby these vendors will facilitate the replication of data from customer sites onto the Nirvanix SDN grid for offsite storage.”

This in-depth analysis, written by Marc Staimer, President & CDS of Dragon Slayer Consulting in June 2008, examines how the pricing and performance economics of the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network versus In-house Storage. In regards to several use cases Cloud Storage, and specifically, the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network, will cost about 1/5 the price of in-house storage.

Abstract: “An apples-to-apples cost comparison shows that Tier 2 monthly burdened cost per GB ranges from approximately 500% more than Nirvanix Cloud Storage to as much as 550% more for 3 copies of the data. Even if the cost of Cloud Storage is compared to Tier 3 monthly burdened cost per GB, ($1 / month and $1.05 / month with an 8% time value of money), the Tier 3 storage is more than 400% more expensively.”
